Welcome to
Junior Sciences!
Junior Sciences covers four main subjects:
Biology
Chemistry
Earth Science or Astronomy
Physics
Science 8 includes the Cell Theory, Molecular Theory, Electromagnetic Radiation and Plate Tectonics.
Science 9 includes Asexual and Sexual Reproduction, the Periodic Table, Circuits including voltage, current and resistance, and Abiotic and Biotic systems.
Science 10 includes DNA and Genetics, Chemical Processes, Energy and its effects on living things and the environment, and the Universe. An Enriched Science 10 course is also offered.
Science 8
Welcome to Science 8! This class is really really really exciting as we explore and investigate certain scientific concepts like cells, the kinetic molecular theory, and energy transfer of waves and particles.
We promise very fun projects(even skits, too!)
Look forward to testing paper airplanes, looking at the cells of an onion, or even directing a cow's eyeball!!! as we go over these important foundational science topics.
Course Content
Cells - the Basic Unit of Life
Characteristics of living things
Different types of cells
Micro-organisms and human interactions
Immune system
Vaccines/antibiotics
The Kinetic Molecular Theory and Theory of the Atom
Physical and chemical properties
States of matter, changes of state
Kinetic molecular theory
Energy - Particle and Wave
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Visible light and its properties
SCIENCE 9
Science 9 is divided into three major areas:
Chemistry
Biology
Physics
Chemistry primarily focuses on atomic theory and the structure of atoms and ions. Students will analyze data from a periodic table to determine the chemical formulas and names of ionic and covalent compounds.
In biology, students will learn about the characteristics of asexual and sexual reproduction and the types of cell division that occur in each method of reproduction; mitosis and meiosis.
In physics, students will learn about current electricity and engage in hands-on activities involving series and parallel circuits. Ohm's law is used to see how voltage, current, and resistance compare quantitatively in each circuit.
SCIENCE 10/ENRICHED SCIENCE 10
Unlike Science 8 and 9, the Science 10 curriculum is more concerned with inquiry, research and presentation than with memorizing for tests and quizzes. Instead of a summative exam, the students will prepare a Capstone project. We will include lessons showing students how to use Data Bases and how to assess the validity and reliability of websites so they may become critical consumers of information.
