About the Program

In Drama we explore, create, rehearse and refine dramatic works through collaborative and individual performance, and reflect on dramatic works and aesthetic experiences. We engage in a variety of learning opportunities such as Warm-Ups and Trust Activities, Self reflection, Improvisation, Scene Work & Characterization, and Film Study. At the Gr. 11/12 level we also do Script Writing & Analysis and One Act Productions.

School Plays

Each year the Holy Cross drama club - known as the Holy Cross Players - puts on a production at the Studio Theatre at the Surrey Arts Centre in Bear Creek Park. Rehearsals usually start in October and in February/March we put on 4 shows over three days including matinee and evening performances. There are many benefits to being involved in drama: it promotes communication skills and teamwork, encourages imagination and creativity and enables students to learn to trust their ideas and abilities.

Over the past years, the Holy Cross Players have attended local theatre productions, participated in workshops with the Arts Club Theatre and welcomed guest speakers such as Jim Byrnes. The confidence students gain from theatre can benefit them in school, career, and life. This year we will be streaming our production "Disney's Frozen".

*The drama class and extracurricular school play are two different things. You do not have to be registered in a drama class to audition for the play

Questions and Answers

Why should students join?

Students should choose drama as an elective because it encourages and provides opportunities for creativity, innovation, and collaboration in a variety of contexts, and it offers dynamic ways to explore, share & express identity and a sense of belonging.

What is needed of me?

There are no prerequisites. Just an open mind, willingness to take risks, and a positive attitude.

Expectations

Students are expected to remain respectful to each other at all times, and to come to class prepared to take risks and challenge themselves. A positive and inclusive attitude is essential for success in the course, and a safe, encouraging atmosphere in the classroom makes taking those risks that much easier. We aim to encourage each other to make everyone's drama experience positive
